The largest town in Nan-Tou, Caotun Zhen (meaning: mound of straws), was originally called "Mound of straw shoes". It was said that, a long time ago, many travellers, merchants, and soldiers usually stopped at this town for a break during their long journey. Their worn-out straw shoes were left behind, thus piling up to a mound. This is the origin of the funny name of the town.
