I am a novelist by profession. I'm not a best-selling author, but I make a decent living. Having been in the publishing industry for so long, I've seen all kinds of novelists. Wives who break their arms trying to write speculative fiction; mild-mannered writers whose work is filled with nauseating gore and hunts; people who have brainstorming sessions with their fictional characters every time they write... Fiction writers, it seems, all have personality problems. But I'm deeply moved by their dedication to writing even at the expense of everything else, and I long for the self-destructive spirit of those who seek beauty even when they go off the beaten path, and it's a hobby of mine to observe these novelists who lead radical lives. There are a lot of weird novelists, a lot of people who get in trouble for their fiction, and I've never met a happy novelist.
